Learn about the faces behind the film

FINLAY HAMILTON

Not just the subject of this film, but also a creative producer. He is a marine researcher, diver, and surfer whose deep connection to the ocean defines every aspect of his life. He embodies it and everything within it. His passion for the ocean meant that he wanted to help us shape this story.

SUBJECT & CREATIVE PRODUCER

KIERAN CRAIGEN

DIRECTOR & CINEMATOGRAPHER

Having previously shot and directed numerous environmental films in the past, Kieran is now taking on the challenge of doing both for this amazing project. With his personal connection to Finlay, he is situated in a unique place to tell this story from within - and he aims to do exactly that.

EILIS FRASER

Experimenting with sound design is a passion for Eilis, and she was drawn to the film due to the unique opportunity to create a diverse range of immersive soundscapes, from the tranquil depths of underwater worlds to the vibrant sounds at water's surface and the expansive audio landscapes in the air.

SOUND RECORDIST & DESIGNER

ALEX MCNEILL

Alex joined this film due to the range of environments it presented, each offering unique challenges and aesthetic possibilities, and the chance to explore various settings allowed for a richer visual narrative, where the subject could be framed consistently and thoughtfully, irrespective of the backdrop.

CINEMATOGRAPHER

The ocean is the lifeblood of our planet, regulating our climate, producing most of the oxygen we breathe, and supporting countless ecosystems. Yet, it’s under siege—from pollution, overfishing, and the escalating impacts of climate change. These threats don’t just endanger marine life; they endanger the future of humanity. We all depend on the ocean, whether we realise it or not, and the time to act is now. We only have one planet, and we must protect her.

FINLAY’S STORY

and why it matters.

Every aspect of Finlay’s life is shaped by it. It’s his workplace, where he dedicates himself to researching and protecting marine ecosystems, and his playground, where he’s spent a lifetime surfing its waves.

But time threatens this connection, budget cuts jeopardise the future of his research, and looming knee surgery may take him away from the waves.

Most critically, time is running out for the ocean itself, as the impacts of climate change and human activity bring us closer to the point of no return.

This is Finlay’s reflection of a life entwined with the sea.

This is his story.

Sustainability is at the heart of this project. The average short film produces approximately 2-3 tonnes of carbon emissions, primarily from travel, energy use, and equipment. We’re committed to minimising our impact through green filmmaking practices, including using local resources, reducing waste, and offsetting unavoidable emissions. In sharing a story about protecting the ocean, we’re also taking steps to protect it whilst me make it.

SUSTAINABILITY

  • In order for the team to take themselves and equipment to St Abbs for filming, we will be renting an all electric vehicle and carpooling - with smaller journeys being made by public transport where possible.

  • All production paperwork will be created and distributed electronically only. This includes marketing and promotional materials after the film is finished.

  • The production is making every effort to achieve BAFTA’s Albert certification. This is awarded to productions that meet rigorous sustainability criteria. It demonstrates a commitment to environmentally responsible filmmaking.
